CPU Peripheral Products

NEC Electronics' new series of µPD65881GB devices includes lead-free products that are functionally similar to the well-known µPD7105x PC peripheral chips and 825x support chips.

NEC Electronics Part Legacy NEC Electronics Part Legacy Part Description
µPD65881GB-P01 µPD71054 8254 Programmable timer/counter
µPD65881GB-P02 µPD71051 8251 Standard serial control unit (USART)
µPD65881GB-P03 µPD71055 8255 Parallel interface unit (PIU)

Based on 0.5 µm CMOS technology, the µPD65881GB series offers RoHS-compliance and low power consumption, while maintaining pin-compatible 44-pin QFP packages and 5-volt operation. All three devices are qualified to support industrial temperature ranges of –40 to 85 degrees Celsius. These low-cost devices can be used as replacement parts in a variety of CPU-based designs and applications such as computers, office equipment, communications equipment, and home appliances.

The new series is functionally equivalent to the previous generation of µPD7105x devices, except for some slight electrical characteristic differences. Refer to the µPD65881GB data sheets to learn more about the differences. A sample part should be tested in your design to ensure compatibility. Production quantities can be ordered after confirming proper operation in your product or application environment.

The µPD65881GB devices are stocked and available through Avnet Electronics Marketing. You can expect long-term supply and support for this upgraded series of CPU peripherals.

Product Descriptions

  • The µPD65881GB-P01 programmable interval timer (PIT) delivers high-performance functionality for timing-control applications in CPUs by incorporating a range of features, including three independently operated 16-bit counters and six count modes for each counter.

  • The µPD65881GB-P02 standard serial control unit is a programmable communication interface and features the capability to communicate serial data via synchronous, asynchronous or bi-synchronous operation. This communications controller is compatible with standard microcontrollers (MCUs) and features low-power standby mode and error detection for parity, overruns

  • The µPD65881GB-P03 programmable peripheral interface unit supports protocols ranging from basic input/output to high-level handshakes. This chip is MCU compatible and features three 8-bit I/O ports, three programmable operation modes and no-wait operation.
